Rhombus Media was formed in 1979 at the York University Film Department, when Barbara Willis Sweete and Niv Fichman created OPUS ONE, NUMBER ONE, a documentary short that established the company's musical direction. Larry Weinstein joined soon after, and the trio have since produced and directed over two hundred films including: THIRTY-TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD, LAST NIGHT, SEPTEMBER SONGS, DIDO AND AENEAS, THE RED VIOLIN, THE PLANETS, LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT, and BEETHOVEN'S HAIR.

Recently released projects include: INSIDE HANA'S SUITCASE(2009) directed by Larry Weisntein a dramatic documentary based on the acclaimed book "Hana's Suitcase" by Karen Levine. Also released the previous year (2008) was THE YOUNG ROMANTIC: A Portrait of Yundi Li, directed by Barbara Willis Sweete and starring Yundi Li, a classic pianist and rising star from China.

Feature films completed in the last few years include: PASSCHENDAELE (2008), a WW I epic filmed and funded entirely in Canada. It was written and directed by the star of the film Paul Gross. BLINDNESS,(2007) a feature length co-production between Canada/Brazil/Japan; is based on the book of the same name by nobel prize winner Jose Saramango. Directed by Fernando Meirelles and stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Danny Glover.SILK, a Canada/Italy/Japan co-production, based on the best selling novel by Alessandro Baricco and directed by Francois Girard. SNOWCAKE, directed by Marc Evans, starring Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman and Carrie-Anne Moss; Don McKellar's CHILDSTAR, starring Jennifer Jason Leigh; CLEAN, a France/Canada/United Kingdom co-production, directed by Olivier Assayas, starring Maggie Cheung and Nick Nolte; and Guy Maddin's THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD starring Isabella Rossellini, Mark McKinney, and Maria de Medeiros.

Other projects include the critically acclaimed series SLINGS & ARROWS, directed by Peter Wellington. Consisting of six one-hour comedy-dramas about a small-town theatre festival, the series is written by Mark McKinney, Bob Martin, and Susan Coyne and stars Paul Gross, Mark McKinney, Rachel McAdams and Sarah Polley.

Also, BURNT TOAST, an eight part series of comedic mini-operas, directed by Larry Weinstein, and depicting different stages of a romantic relationship. BEETHOVEN'S HAIR, also directed by Weinstein, is a musical documentary based on Russell Martin's internationally best-selling book of the same name. Weinstein's MOZARTBALLS! is a light-hearted and off-the-wall investigation of Mozart's legacy. ELIZABETH REX, directed by Barbara Willis-Sweete, is a television adaptation of Canadian author Timothy Findley's award-winning play. FIVE DAYS IN SEPTEMBER, also by Sweete, is a feature documentary revealing the dramatic rebirth of a symphony orchestra.

Rhombus' most renowned project to date is THE RED VIOLIN (from the creative team responsible for THIRTY-TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD), starring Samuel L. Jackson and Greta Scacchi. This dramatic feature film follows an extraordinary concert violin through its long and turbulent life - from its bloody "birth" in Cremona in 1681 to a high powered auction in the present day. The film won an Oscar for best original score at the 72nd Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles in March 2000.

Rhombus has co-produced its films with many international partners, including all of the major Public Television Networks and Classical Record Labels. Rhombus Feature Films have been distributed in all major territories, by some of the most renowned Theatrical Distributors.
